C2P10 – Yeah, yeah

|
Sometimes things just don’t work out. That last panel has been such a frustration, particularly since I loved the dialog, but could NOT get the expressions to work. This was my best attempt out of about six different tries, and I’m still not happy with it. However, I decided that my perfectionist tendencies were obviously not going to get me anywhere (unless you count a shabby hotel room at the Town o’ RAGE) so I accepted this version as “good enough” and will try to do better in the future. I think what’s the most frustrating is that my rough thumbnail sketch of that panel looked AWESOME, which is almost always a guarantee that the actual panel won’t work. I get so hung up on getting it to match the rough exactly that I lose the feel of that particular moment.
What do you do when you can’t get an image to come out right?

This is so cute.
Well, think of this way. The hands in this page are exquisite.
Haha! Well, that IS a pretty good way to look at it, isn’t it! Just because one thing didn’t work out doesn’t mean there isn’t something good in there too.
Hmm. Generally, I leave it be while I go off and be irritated for a while and wrack my brain to try to think of how else to work it. Eventually, I get distracted by something shiny and I forget about the whole thing. When I do finally go back to it, something just clicks, and I say “Oh! That was easy.” Perhaps a step back and a short break would do you good
Also, when working with odd perspectives, try to have someone model for you. If that’s not possible, take some digital photos of yourself in that pose to study from.
I use a lot of photo and video reference. The only downside to it is that my body type =/= my character’s body types!
Leaving something alone I struggle with. I tend to dig my teeth in and not let go! Unfortunately, this usually just makes things worse. Someday, I’ll learn when to let things go!
That is an excellent point! And much more difficult to deal with.
I admire your ability to be able to focus so well on something – I’m so easily distracted!
If only we could swap a bit of our strengths and weaknesses, we could become Uber-Artists, with the optimal amount of focus and adaptability!
Alas, not an option. Unless you have a brain-swap machine handy in your basement.
A brain-swap machine, eh? I don’t happen to have one on hand, but I’ll keep an eye out at any flea markets and auctions
This really shows the whole “Brother Sister” relationship between the two.
Okay, I probably haven’t said it, but Tama? yeah, my favorite character thus far.
I love Tama. He was my first favorite in the cast. The others have grown as I fleshed them out, but something about Tama made him easy for me to love from the first line I put to paper. Even if he IS a bit of a brat.
