C05P01 – Complex Man

More exciting news! I’ve been asked to join the Webcomic Alliance Team! I’ll be participating on their podcasts and contributing articles, alongside Dawn Griffin of Zorphbert and Fred, Byron Wilkins of 1977 The Comic, Drezz Rodriguez of El Cuervo, and Chris Flick of Capes ‘n Babes! I’m very honored to be asked, and excited to see what I can bring to the webcomic community!!
As part of the SpiderForest Community, we’re having a comic of the week! This week’s feature is Sunset Grill! It’s 2426. Earth is a patchwork quilt of squabbling Domains, loosely joined under the mantle of the Empire, which fights to present a united front to technologically advanced, land-hungry alien races. None of which matters particularly to the Sunset Grill, a bar on the shady side of town in the corrupt city of Kieselburg. The comic follows the bar’s staff and patrons as they meet the challenges of their imperfect world with humor, determination, and the occasional moment of grace.

Congrats on joining the WA team!
Thank you! I was surprised to be asked, but I’m excited to see what I can bring to the community. I see many world-building articles in my future!
Congrats on the Alliance! That is very cool…
While I appreciate the shift of focuse, WTH happened with the other three! AAAA!!!!
I think this is probably one of the most wicked cliffhangers I’ve ever done…and I’ve been known to be pretty evil about cliffhangers.
Yes, yes you have! LOL! Tis okay I’ll get over it (I think)
Did anybody else hear Kato from the most recent “Green Hornet” movie on that first line?
So very, very jealous AND happy for you being asked to join the WA team. One day I’d love to be on one of the podcasts- the group is so much fun. Not listening to WA is definitely one thing I hate the most about headphone privileges being taken away at my job.
My job transitioned and now I can’t listen to as many podcasts too! I miss that part of my routine!! Trying to incorporate it more in my comic-making time at home.
Congrats on joining the Alliance!
Also, ack poor Warren. I know this feeling too.
Thank you!
As for Warren, I realized that we’ve gotten windows into the background of MOST of the cast, but Warren remained a bit of a mystery. When I laid out the plot for this chapter, it felt hollow. I realized that the events of chapter five were going to be really challenging for Warren, and in order to make that mean anything, we needed to dig deeper into his character.
Oh man, congrats! I’m excited to see what you can bring to the webcomics community, too, other than what you already have
I’m also excited about this new turn in the story! I love knowing stuff like this about the characters.
I’m glad you’re excited! This is definitely a hard left into a totally different rhythm of storytelling. It’s been exceptionally challenging, but that’s why I wanted to do this segment! I want to grow as a writer, and forcing myself out of my comfort zone seems the best way to accomplish that. I hope people enjoy the result (and can forgive me for the evil cliffhanger)!
Well…. this is oddly… thoughtful. Hell of a jump cut.
*has used so many of these types of cliffhangers that she cannot complain*
This is that bit I always hated in books where the author cuts away from the characters I’m super invested in to some other cast member and I just wanted to SCREAM.
…and now I’m the author doing exactly that. Ah, how the wheel has turned.
Isn’t it great?
I really-really love shadows on this page :33
Thank you! I’m trying to experiment more with lighting. I was really inspired with the lights and shadows on a lot of Mistytang’s work on DA and she was kind enough to give me some tips. Trying them out and seeing if I can get better!!
Nice shading and texture!
Thank you! This chapter I’m trying to up my game both in art and writing. Gotta keep pushing for improvement!!
