I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on DreamEater’s word balloons – best happy accident ever! I had found a neat tutorial on smoke for Photoshop. In the process of applying filters, I accidentally selected the wrong layer…and decided to keep the result!

Children visit this site. Moderate your language accordingly.

Oh my. These are some … mature themes for a “children visit this site” comic. Trigger-warning level.

What’s the target… PG-13?

The intended target was PG-13 when I first started this project. However, I’ve had teachers use the book in 3rd and 4th grade classrooms, and often they let the kids visit the site. So while there are definitely mature themes, there is no swearing or sexual content in this story for that reason. In general, most children I’ve worked with are a lot better at handling mature themes and ideas, particularly around death, than adults give them credit for. Most kids can decide for themselves within the first ten pages if this is a comic that’s okay for them or not. Or, for that matter, a parent evaluating the content for their child. Part of why I put the heavy stuff right up front, so nobody is surprised later.
