Ha ha you kids are hilarious.

The news has been frightening, disturbing, and terrible recently. I’m not going to dive into it too much here, beyond challenging everyone to take a hard look at one’s self. At one’s education. At beliefs that may need to be questioned and challenged. What’s happening in Charlottesville is overt and horrible, but that it exists in this nation at all is because of covert attitudes and behavior that enable it. This is not new or happening in isolation. This is just one more piece of a long chain of ugly history. Until we can acknowledge the past and believe the experiences of minorities in the present, we are not going to be able to build a better future. Until we start finding our own blindspots, we can’t work to address them. So let’s all endeavor to become better, because this chain is not going to break itself. We have to do that, tiny steps at a time.

So…now that we’ve had something grim, let’s have something light to balance it. Sound good? Good.

I recently had a brainstorming call with one of my developmental editing clients. Part of what I specialize in is working people during the creation of their stories. So rather than wait until finishing an 800-page draft to get feedback and help, many of my clients send me outlines, single chapters, or have calls with me as they go. Run into a block? Feeling doubts about the direction your plot is taking? Not sure if your exposition is too much or not enough? No need to dwell on it, we can just work it out!

After our call, this client, Joichi, surprised me with not one, but TWO adorable comics that just melted my heart. Here they are:

(How does she know about my feather floofs?? MY SECRET IS BLOWN!)

This one makes me want to go to a show cosplaying as myself. I could get little wings and a microphone! Plus: Suit and tie, you can’t go wrong with that. I love the sleek lines of a nice suit on pretty much anyone. Including me!

If you’d like to see more of Joichi’s work, head over to Tumblr and check out Lavender Tea Comics!

So those are my serious thoughts and my happy thoughts for today. What are yours?

(Side note: You don’t have to feel one or the other or either. You can just feel what you feel. I’m just trying to start conversation. Mostly, I’m just grateful you’re here. Optional!Hugs to you all. Take care of yourselves.)

Children visit this site. Moderate your language accordingly.

I feel bad for Dream Eater’s library. First Vision brings his big fire head in there and then evil!Dream Eater pukes all over it. But at least he let them go and we didn’t end up spending another 10 chapters in here. Not that I would have minded that. But still.

Thank you for speaking up about this weekend, Robin. All we can do is keep speaking up.

Those books and scrolls have definitely seen better days.

/Returns those Optional!Hugs!/

Those comics are adorable and encouraging, I agree!

And it’s good to know that all the people I trust are on the same page re: listening to people. As a Jew, it helps me feel safer on the Web at large.
