Pakku doles out the harshness.

Thought I’d share an interesting video/music composition I found today.  It’s by Ophir Kutiel, aka Kutiman, and is a song composed of a large mix of snippets from various videos made by Youtubers of musical persuasion. I have a special place for mash-ups in my heart ever since I discovered “Upular” by Pogo (which does a similar mix of sounds and snippets to create melodies using pieces of the film UP) and this song, called “Give it Up” was a fun find for me.

I’m not sure what I enjoy about mash-ups like this so much. Maybe it’s how so many things that seem so disconnected from each other come together to make something new. The synthesis of it. What was one thing, a small thing, suddenly becomes part of a much larger whole. There’s something that seems beautiful and whole about that. Maybe it’s simply a desire to find a place where I feel I fit. To be a part of something greater, and know my contribution mattered.

Or maybe they just sound cool. 🙂

What do you think of mash-ups, and do you have a favorite?

I think mashups are their own art form. A well done combination of two things can create something original that was never there in either source material.

The music mashup I like the best is call-me-maybe + head-like-a-hole:

though, I’m not into anything else by that mashup artist.

I like video+music mashups the best. In fact, I think that’s what got me into My Little Pony Friendship is Magic; the fan base makes AMAZING mashups (and lots of other amazing fan works).

Ponycraft2 is one of my favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJbAT1wzS8U

Dragon your man could smell like is also a favorite:

Thank you for sharing one with us! (I will totally watch it later, when I’m not at work.)

I think my favorite mashups are the United State of Pop remixes by DJ Earworm and the Summer Medleys by youtubers Kurt Schneider and Sam Tsui. Basically they take hit songs of the year and make them into can’t-get-this-out-of-your-head earworms.

The thing that’s really different about the DJ Earworm ones specifically is that he takes the sound bites and strings them together so that the cut lyrics actually make sense as a new lyrical song. My favorite one is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q0dsG8fTHY And he makes one every year!

As for the page…. yeah, I can imagine that Pakku is totally like that to EVERYONE. But I hope he does end up helping Warren out… their odd couple dynamic is just the best!

That’s a neat idea, to create a song for the year. Almost captures an undercurrent of the culture’s psyche for the time period.

Definitely, definitely! I’ve nnoticed that he focuses a lot on common themes when ‘writing’ the new words, bringing out popular elements. Like that one year where everyone mentioned something as ‘on fire’, he focused on those lyrics. It’s really cool that he does that.
